Gegard Mousasi def. Mark Munoz UFC Fight Night 41

Saturday, the Gegard Mousasi everyone has been waiting to see had a chance to do his thing. Mousasi, the former Dream and Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, put on a dominant show against veteran Mark Munoz in the middleweight main event of UFC Fight Night 41 in Berlin, Germany. Mousasi schooled Munoz before finishing him with a rear-naked choke at 3:57 of the opening round. "I worked a lot on the rear-naked choke and guillotine," Mousasi (35-4-2) said in his post-fight interview. "He's a wrestler, so he always comes forward. I want to pick up the angle and slowly go forward."Mousasi hunched his stance to prepare for Munoz's takedowns, and the "Filipino Wrecking Machine" lived up to his promise to go for the takedowns. The problem for Munoz was that Mousasi stuffed nearly all of them, and the one time he was taken down he wound up on top in a scramble. When they sprawled, Mousasi used elbows to the side of the head (although a couple of punches landed on the back of the head). Gegard twice mounted Munoz, with the second one coming from Munoz's own takedown attempt. Mousasi flattened Munoz out, sunk in a deep rear-naked choke, and Munoz had no choice but to tap out. It seemed that Mousasi was aiming for the submission more than the knockout as he'd attempted a face crank just prior to the finishing sequence. In the battle of the undefeated middleweights, Sean Strickland managed to maintain his perfect record. The California native moved to 14-0 in his MMA career after taking a close split-decision over the Brit. Despite being fairly inactive, Strickland still managed to do most of the damage in the fight, avoiding the Brits strikes while landing shots of his own. The featherweights kicked off the main card as Sweden's Niklas Backstrom took on Finland's Tom Niinimaki. Both men came out firing, but it was Niinimaki who took control early using his grappling skills to get the fight to the mat. He was unable to keep his opponent down, however, which cost him dearly. Backstrom landed a huge knee before finishing the fight with a ninja choke.

Peruvian player hit in the head with a paper airplane

England dispatched Peru 3-0 on Friday in their World Cup tuneup, but the best shot of the night didn't come from anyone on the pitch. No, that honour was reserved for one intrepid fan whose paper airplane traveled from the very top of Wembley Stadium all the way down and onto the pitch. Not only did his side cough up three goals in a lacklustre defeat to England, he got hit in the side of the head by a paper plane hurled from the stands. Everyone watching on television and in the ground saw the bizarre incident as the homemade aircraft soared on to his bonce. Joe Hart, Leighton Baines and the referee all had to discard the various flying bits of paper. Surely if England could win with weaponized paper soaring through the skies, they can handle just about anything in Brazil. Maybe.

Jonny Gomes, Yunel Escobar, Sean Rodriguez ejected In Red Sox

An American League East divisional battle between the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday got heated and resulted in benches clearing in the seventh inning. Umpires ejected Boston's Jonny Gomes and Tampa Bay's Yunel Escobar from the ballgame amid the chaos. The benches emptied when Escobar began walking toward the Sox dugout, at which point Jonny Gomes came in from left field and shoved Escobar. There was some pushing and shoving between the teams after that, but it didn’t escalate much further. Escobar, Gomes and Rays infielder Sean Rodriguez were all ejected.Red Sox left fielder Jonny Gomes came in and shoved Escobar in the face, ultimately leading to his ejection. The most heated on the Tampa Bay side appeared to be Jose Molina, Grant Balfour and Sean Rodriguez. Rodriguez was also thrown out of the game, along with Escobar.Players from both benches ran onto the field, and more shoving occurred, but tempers eventually cooled down. If anything, it was fun to see another chapter in the Boston-Tampa Bay rivalry.

Renan Barao vs TJ Dillashaw Fight UFC 173

LAS VEGAS – With massive odds against him, T.J. Dillashaw not only defied them, but he made them look like they were inadvertently reversed. Dillashaw dominated bantamweight champion Renan Barao to win the title, even as the Brazilian entered the fight as a favorite of as much as 10-to-1, and with many calling him the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. It was Barao’s first loss since 2005. Dillashaw (10-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) outstruck Barao (32-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) at nearly every turn, planting him on the canvas in the first round and then never looking back, even when Barao tried to answer. But instead of cruising to a dominant decision win, Dillashaw stayed after the finish in the fifth round – ultimately putting the champion on the canvas with a left hand before pouncing to finish off the massive upset. Dillashaw has now won five of his last six and showed phenomenal movement and striking en route to a fifth round finish, beating one of the greatest in the world in surprisingly dominant fashion. Renan Barao looked out of his depth at times, almost getting finished on multiple occasions and having no match for Dillashaw’s footwork. Dillashaw handed Barao his first loss in 36 fights. In Duane Ludwig’s last fight as Team Alpha Male coach, he showed why he earned the Coach of the Year award in 2014 when Dillashaw put on a striking clinic. The win sets up a rematch between TJ Dillashaw and Raphael Assuncao, a fight that ended in a controversial split decision in Assuncao’s favour. Assuncao was originally offered the fight against Barao, but is sidelined due to injury. Midway through the fifth round, Dillashaw dropped Barao before finishing the fight with punches. It was not Dillashaw’s first knockdown of the fight–he scored one in the first round–but it was the one that officially put the belt around his waist. The fight was waved off due to TKO at 2:26 of Round Five.

Daniel Carcillo Ejected After Shoving Linesman In Game 3 (Video)

Rangers forward Daniel Carcillo took an early exit from Game 3 after hitting linesman Scott Driscoll as Driscoll tried to pull him away from a fight. Montreal's Brandon Prust and New York's Derek Dorsett dropped the gloves roughly six minutes into the first period, but only after Carcillo charged Prust (and received a minor). Carcillo's appearance in Game 4 lasted just 1:45 before he was ejected in the first period for having a bit of a physical altercation with a linesman. Carcillo also had a two-minute minor for charging in there while Brandon Prust and Derek Dorsett were assessed five-minute fighting majors for their bout that was taking place in the background.Dorsett wound up fighting Prust a few minutes after the late hit on Stepan. While that bout was happening, Carcillo received a game misconduct for shoving a linesman multiple times.

NASCAR's Kurt Busch crashes during Indy 500 practice

Andretti Autosport has confirmed that Kurt Busch will drive Marco Andretti’s backup car in Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 after his heavy crash in practice this afternoon. Busch’s No. 26 Andretti Autosport Honda can be fixed after its run-in with the Turn 2 wall, but the repairs will not be completed in time for Race Day. However, Busch will be able to retain his starting position of 12th under Indy 500 rule Number 8.4.3.9 (as conveniently tweeted out by INDYCAR director of communications Mike Kitchel. The 2004 NASCAR Cup champion exited the damaged car on his own and was taken to the speedway's infield care center for a mandatory examination. Before the accident, Busch had completed 56 laps of practice, with his last lap clocked at 223.433 mph. "One-hundred percent just working in traffic," Busch said. "Just trying to settle in and not make mistakes, and I just made a mistake."Maybe I didn't keep up with keeping the car underneath me. Trying to get into that rhythm and feel other things around you and I got behind on my adjustments in the car." Moyer said the team has spare cars back at the shop on Zionsville Road. Busch, a rookie in this Indianapolis 500 field, is scheduled to start 12th in Sunday's 500, but this car would seem to be destroyed. Team manager Kyle Moyer put the possible rebuilding of the car at "50-50." Using another car in this circumstance will not cost Busch his position.Busch is trying to become only the fourth driver to complete the double, joining Tony Stewart, John Andretti and Robby Gordon. “I was starting to feel comfortable," IndyCar's website quoted Busch as saying after the wreck. "That's when I made the mistake of just letting my guard down."If you're going to have [an accident] it's better to have it early in the week so there's time to work on the car, get back on your horse and get out there again," he said.

Katy Perry Performs ‘Birthday’ On Billboard Music Awards 18 May 2014

Katy Perry sent in a performance from her "Prismatic" tour for the 2014 Billboard Music Awards and the offering can only be described as a vomiting of neon colors swirling around a giant cake while performing her "Birthday" song. But the pinnacle was when she took off on a flying harness and asked the audience, "Who wants a ride?" Presumably many, many people. The 29-year-old entertainer is currently in the middle of her Prismatic World Tour, which is currently in Glasgow, Scotland. Katy will remain in the Scotland/England area until the end of the month.A lucky girl in the crowd holding a birthday poster caught the eye of KP, who brought her up on stage and put her in a decorated birthday throne. The set was impressive — the throne turned into a spinning birthday cake, surrounded by men in birthday-themed bodysuits showing off acrobatic moves along towering birthday candles.Perry was just one of the show-stoppers performing at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards, which had already presented performances by 5 Seconds of Summer, Shakira, Florida Georgia Line, Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea and more by the time the KatyCats got to watch their idol. Perry is a finalist for Top Artist at the Billboard Music Awards, along with Miley Cyrus, Imagine Dragons, Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake.

Michael Jackson Performance Hologram Billboard Music Awards 2014

Nearly five years after his death, a virtual Michael Jackson took to the stage at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards and wowed his fans. A remarkably life-like hologram of the King of Pop performed “Slave to the Rhythm,” a song from his second posthumously released album, “Xscape.”Jackson, in hologram form, performed "Slave to the Rhythm" midway through Sunday night's show with a five-piece band and 16 dancers live onstage. Jackson appeared in gold jacket, white T-shirt and brick red trousers on a set modeled on the art work for the album "Dangerous," an appropriate choice as the track was recorded in 1991 with L.A. Reid and Babyface during the sessions for that album. Released this week on "XSCAPE," which is neck-and-neck with the new Black Keys album for No. 1 on the Billboard 200 next week, the track was produced by Timbaland. BBMA producers Dick Clark Productions built a special stage at the rear of the MGM Grand Arena that was used only for the Jackson performance. Dancers moved through aisles as Jackson was seen rising from a throne, walking down steps before going into several trademark routines, a moonwalk being one of the them. Lasers, streams of flames and dancers in ancient costumes were part of the film. The King of Pop absolutely shut down the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. There was no question about it — he owned the stage. The performance opened up with Michael’s hologram sitting on a throne, before getting up to bring out his best moves. As a hologram, Michael danced and sang his way into history once again. And yes, his moves included that famous moonwalk.I think it’s a bit in poor taste to air this for the sake of selling Michael Jackson’s posthumous album Xscape. Can’t we just let him rest in peace and not continually make money off him?I miss Michael so much!

Young boy pulls foul ball switch at Rangers game (Video) 5/17/14

This young Texas Rangers fan is the coolest kid in Texas. During the fourth inning of the Blue Jays-Rangers game, Toronto third base coach Luis Rivera tossed him a foul ball, and the fan saw his opportunity to score major points with the girl sitting behind him. The boy already had a ball in his possession, so when he caught the game ball in his glove, he quickly turned and passed off the decoy to the girl. The video provides a few replays to help you follow along, but when the boy catches the actual foul ball, he's already holding a different ball. (The origins of this ball are unknown.) He moves his hand to make it look like he's taking the foul ball out of his glove—at least, to the people around him—then hands his Wendy Peffercorn the other ball. People around him are impressed with his generosity. As announcers noticed during the game, the young boy appears to pull a switcheroo. He catches a ball tossed from Luis Rivera in his glove, then immediately turns around and furnishes a ball to the female fans. But replays from the game showed the boy actually kept the foul ball in his glove, and gave a decoy to the ladies.

Matt Brown Vs Erick Silva Fight : UFC Fight Night 40

Matt Brown's tremendous run up the UFC welterweight ranks merited a main event spot in front of his fellow Ohioans, as he took on Brazilian talent Erick Silva in the UFC Fight Night headliner in Cincinnati. It was expected to be a thriller, and boy did it deliver. Silva took Brown down in just 20 seconds but Brown quickly reversed and got back to his feet. Brown was doubled over by a Silva body kick and looked to be in grave danger. Silva was unable to get the TKO finish so he went to work on a potential neck crank but Brown fought out of it and got back to his feet. Brown badly hurt Silva with punches and elbows and knees, kept coming forward, and nearly turned the tables and got his own TKO stoppage in what was an epic 1st round. In the second, Brown again rushed forward before another Silva kick to the body briefly changed the momentum. But Brown would not be denied, and he quickly recovered and came back to batter Silva with punches, knees and elbows from all angles. Silva showed heart in the face of the assault, but the fatigue of the early work was evident. Silva’s best moments came when he scored to the body with both kicks and punches, but Brown took control of the action by taking the fight to the floor and looking to set up first an inverted triangle choke and then a D’Arce choke. Silva survived both holds, but Brown transitioned into mount and looked to punch away from the dominant position. Brown eventually turned out for an armbar that missed and saw his opponent score with a sweep, but Silva was unable to capitalize on top position late in the round.Silva nearly had him finished in the first round, delivering a kick to the body that floored the contender. He worked for a potential rear-naked choke, but was unable to secure it. Brown quickly recovered and went on the attack. By the time the third round came to be, Brown was in complete control. He dropped Silva with a flurry and pounced, attacking him before the ref finally stepped in and stopped the action. The Brazilian had to be escorted out of the Octagon on a stretcher.

Biplane Crashes At Northern California Air Show (Video)

A vintage civilian airplane crashed onto the tarmac at Travis Air Force Base in California while performing low-altitude aerial acrobatics during an air show Sunday, killing its pilot, officials said. Air Force base officials identified the dead pilot as Eddie Andreini, 77, of Half Moon Bay, Calif. He was performing an acrobatic aerial maneuver at the "Thunder over Solano'' Air Expo when his PT-17 Stearman biplane aircraft crashed at approximately 2:05 p.m. The base posted online that an air show at the base "has been cancelled due to the aircraft crash of an aerial performer.''An Air Force statement identified Edward Andreini of Half Moon Bay as the killed pilot; Federal Aviation Administration records show him to be the registered owner of the 1944 Stearman biplane. The World War II-era aircraft was commonly used to train pilots. Col. David Mott, 60th Operations Group commander at the base said the plane was trying to perform a maneuver known as "cutting a ribbon" where it inverts and flies close to the ground so that a knife attached to the plane can slice a ribbon just off the ground.Spectator Angie Giles, from Antioch, said the plane "flipped over to do a trick and hit the ground and dragged over the ground." Sgt. Rachel Martinez, a spokeswoman for the base, said nobody in attendance was injured. Martinez said organizers estimated that 100,000 people attended the air show Sunday. The plane crash cut short the air show as emergency responders flooded to the scene. The plane crash cut short the "Thunder Over Solano" air show as people were evacuated. Sgt. Rachel Martinez, a spokeswoman for the base, said organizers estimated that 100,000 people attended the air show Sunday. The pilot had flown planes since he was 16 years old and had performed stuns in shows for 25 years. Andreini's website advertising his air show says "your audience will be thrilled at the sight of this huge biplane performing double outside loops, square loops, torque rolls, double snap rolls, and ... a heart-stopping, end-over-end tumble maneuver."

Floyd Mayweather's win over Marcos Maidana at MGM Grand

LAS VEGAS (AP) — It might have been the toughest $32 million Floyd Mayweather Jr. ever made.Marcos Maidana did everything Saturday night but beat Mayweather, taking him 12 tough rounds before losing a majority decision. Mayweather remained unbeaten, but not by much. Maidana swarmed all over him from the opening bell and gave him perhaps his toughest fight in a 16-year professional career.Cut over his eye and temporarily blinded by a head butt in the fourth round, Mayweather had to rally in the last half of the fight to avoid losing for the first time since he was beaten on a controversial decision in the 1996 Olympics. In the end, though, Mayweather got the win — just as he did in his previous 45 fights in a decision that was met with disbelief by Maidana and booed heavily by the crowd. He retained his welterweight title by winning 117-111 on one scorecard and 116-112 on another. A third judge had it even at 114-114.Mayweather threw half as many punches as Maidana, but still managed to land more blows. Yet the 221 punches Maidana landed were the most times Mayweather has been hit, according to data compiled by Showtime Stats on 38 of Mayweather’s previous fights. Maidana thought he was robbed. ”I definitely think I won this fight,” said Maidana. “Floyd did not fight like the man I expected him to. He made me change the gloves. I had bigger gloves and everything and I still gave him a fight.”Mayweather flipped the fight in his favor the next six, though, which was enough for comfortable margins on two of the judges' scorecards.Maidana came charging out of the blocks and an early onslaught had Mayweather backing up in the opening round, while another furious flurry in the third once again gave the outsider the upper hand. Mayweather appeared stunned by his opponent's start and although the American suffered a rare cut in the fourth round – seemingly via an unintentional headbutt - he gradually found his range. Maidana kept coming forward but his wild swings did not land with the regularity they had earlier in the fight and Mayweather began to pick him off. The resurgent Mayweather backed his opponent up with strong shots on a couple of occasions but neither fighter came close to forcing a stoppage.

California Chrome WINS 140th Kentucky Derby 2014 (Video)

California Chrome may have been the 2-1 favorite entering Saturday's Run for the Roses, but his appearance at Churchill Downs was nothing if not a minor miracle. He's no Kentucky blue blood, born to an $8,000 dam; is trained by 77-year-old Art Sherman, who never before trained a Derby horse; had never raced outside of his home state of California; and is owned by a couple of guys who call their stable Dumb Ass Partnership. And yet he won the Kentucky Derby going away, sprinting away from the field down the stretch, winning by five lengths in a time of 2:03.66.Victor Espinoza and trainer Art Sherman celebrate after California Chrome's victory.Commanding Curve was second. Danza was third."I never dreamt of winning two Kentucky Derbies in my entire career," Espinoza told NBC's on-horse reporter Donna Brothers on the track after his winning ride. "It’s an awesome feeling and when I work hard, everything comes along."The 5-2 favorite stretched his winning streak to five and Art Sherman, 77, became the oldest winning Derby trainer. It was the second Derby win for Espinoza, who rode War Emblem to victory in 2002. "I thought he rode him perfect. I never gave him any instructions. I just said, 'You know this horse, go for it,'" Sherman said. In a game dominated by millionaires and billionaires, this was a victory for the little guys. Owners Perry Martin and Steve Coburn bred an $8,000 mare to a $2,500 stallion to win America's most famous race with their one-horse stable.California Chrome is the only horse owners Coburn and Perry Martin have in the stable at Dumb Ass Partners and is the California (natch) product of an $8,000 mare and $2,500 stallion. Commanding Turn came in second and Danza finished third.

Zach Randolph Suspended for Game 7 Punching Steven Adams (Video)

The NBA has suspended Memphis forward Zach Randolph for Game 7 of a first-round playoff series between the Grizzlies and Thunder on Saturday after determining that he “punched” Oklahoma City center Steven Adams “in the jaw” during Game 6 on Thursday. With a little over six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and Oklahoma City leading 88-71, Adams and Randolph battled for rebounding position during a Memphis possession. After the shot missed, Oklahoma City cleared the rebound and play began to move down to the other end. The two players briefly jockeyed, and Randolph appeared to use both arms to shove Adams in the face, causing Adams to run off of his course towards the sideline. This is Game 7! And it's probably safe to say that if this were KD throwing a 'bow, and happened to catch Tony Allen upside the head, the Thunder wouldn't be missing one of their best players for the deciding game of a series.Memphis could turn to reserve power forwards James Johnson, Ed Davis and Jon Leuer to make up for Randolph's absence. The winner of Memphis-Oklahoma City will play the winner of the Los Angeles Clippers-Golden State Warriors series in the second round.Memphis coach Dave Joerger's team has dealt with injuries and lineup changes all season. Tony Allen missed 27 games this season, Marc Gasol 23 and Conley nine. Kosta Koufos and Ed Davis will likely fill Randolph's minutes. "This is it," Joerger said. "Whatever you want to say about the season, it's all come down to one game. Certainly, for us to have the best chance to win, we have to play better than we did last night."
