Afterwards, Johnson landed a big punch that knocked Cormier to the mat about 30 seconds into the bout. Cormier was able to recover and get Johnson’s back standing up and slammed him to the ground. Johnson was able to get to a knee to prevent being on the ground with his back exposed. He's in half guard on top. Hard elbow on top now from Cormier. Cormier briefly locks up a kimura, but can't get it. He's still hunting it. Cormier lets go of the grip, but secures the crossface.Outside leg kick for Cormier while Johnson lands a hook. Johnson tries to take DC down and briefly does before DC pops back up again. Now DC turns him into the cage, gets behind him and drags him to the mat. Both fighters are exhausted. Johnson landed a couple shots while trying to hold of Cormier who was trying to keep him against the cage. Johnson dropped to his knees and Cormier had his back but couldn’t take advantage. UFC 187 Chris Weidman Def. Vitor Belfort First-Round TKO

LAS VEGAS – Chris Weidman had to weather an early storm to do it, but the UFC middleweight champion defended his title in devastating fashion against Vitor Belfort. After being cut open by an early flurry, Weidman (13-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) took Belfort (24-11 MMA, 13-7 UFC) down and pummeled him relentlessly on the mat, forcing the TKO stoppage at the 2:53 mark of Round 1. The middleweight title fight was the co-main event of today’s UFC 187 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. After a sloppy take down attempt, one that resulted in Belfort nearly getting ahold of him, he backed up and fell to his feet. Belfort fell backing away and Weidman rushed at Belfort and went for a flying knee. He slipped landing and Belfort was able to capitalize and it looked like Weidman was in a lot of trouble. Chris seemed to be cut near his eye and Belfort teed off on him in a massive flurry but Weidman took his best shots and covered up well. Chris had an easy takedown of Belfort and dominated from there. He gained full mount, then back mount, and unloaded a series of ruthless ground-and-pound. Weidman returned to full mount and crushed Belfort with punishing punches and elbows that literally had Vitor's head bouncing off the canvas. Herb Dean had seen enough and called an end to the fight not even 3 minutes into the round.

Will Smith ejected for foreign substance on glove arm

Brewers pitcher Will Smith earned an ejection tonight from crew chief Jim Joyce after Braves skipper Fredi Gonzalez raised an objection over the existence of a foreign substance on Smith’s wrist. Smith entered the game in relief of Matt Garza and hit Pedro Ciriaco with a pitch before throwing a first-pitch strike to Jace Peterson. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez then asked the umpires to check for a substance near Smith’s right wrist/forearm area. It looked a lot like Vaseline, which he could use to change the movement of his pitches. Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel notes that Smith was furious after he was ejected and was gesturing toward the Braves’ dugout as he walked off the field. Gonzalez argued that Smith was breaking the rules after the left-hander threw a pitch that bounced in front of the plate and hit pinch-hitter Pedro Ciriaco, the only batter he faced, in the leg.

Bryce Harper and Matt Williams Ejected Against Yankees

Bryce Harper took a called strike in the third inning of tonight’s Nationals-Yankees game in Washington. The call — which was the first pitch of the at bat — irked Harper enough for him to step out of the box, while home plate umpire Marvin Hudson traded words with the Nationals’ dugout. The argument appeared to center around a called first strike, and Harper’s deliberate movement into and out of the batter’s box thereafter. Hudson, however, told a pool reporter that it had “nothing to do with the box.”It is the second time in eight days that Harper and Williams were both ejected from a game. They were ejected from last Wednesday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks for arguing a checked swing.

Blackhawks' Rozsival leaves game with gruesome leg injury

Blackhawks defenseman Michal Rozsival left tonight’s fourth game of Chicago’s series against the Wild with a horrific-looking ankle injury that left his skate pointing in the exact opposite direction that feet are supposed to go.With about 6 1/2 minutes played in the second period, Rozsival fell down while trying to guard Thomas Vanek, who went in on a short breakaway that Corey Crawford turned aside. His left leg took the brunt of the fall, and it was immediately clear from the expression on Rozsival’s face that the tumble was as painful as it looked. Less than a minute after he left, the Blackhawks conceded their first goal of the game, a Patrick Haula wrist shot with 13:19 left in the second period.
