Gentle Giant' Dies After NYPD Cop Puts Him In Chokehold (Video)

The 350-pound man, about to be arrested on charges of illegally selling cigarettes, was arguing with the police. When an officer tried to handcuff him, the man pulled free. The officer immediately threw his arm around the man’s neck and pulled him to the ground, holding him in what appears, in a video, to be a chokehold. The man can be heard saying “I can’t breathe” over and over again as other officers swarm about. Now, the death of the man, Eric Garner, 43, soon after the confrontation on Thursday on Staten Island, is being investigated by the police and prosecutors. At the center of the inquiry is the officer’s use of a chokehold — a dangerous maneuver that was banned by the New York Police Department more than 20 years ago but that the department cannot seem to be rid of.“As defined in the department’s patrol guide, this would appear to have been a chokehold,” the police commissioner, William J. Bratton, said at a news conference in City Hall on Friday afternoon.Police said Garner, who was a married father of six children, died of a heart attack during the arrest, according to The Associated Press. The NYPD said Garner had been seen selling untaxed cigarettes, and that he had been arrested before for the same offense. Garner denied the allegations and asked a plainclothes officer why he was stopped. “Every time you see me you want to mess with me," Garner told cops in the video. "I’m tired of it. It stops today!” When Garner refused to put his hands behind his back, and asked one officer not to touch him, two others moved in to make the arrest. Video shows at least one officer putting Garner in a chokehold and slamming him on the ground.Garner can be heard screaming "I can't breathe, I can't breathe!" before going quiet.Multiple witnesses to the death expressed anger at the NYPD.New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio released a statement about Garner’s death, assuring it will be investigated. "On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Garner, who died yesterday afternoon while being placed in police custody,” the statement read. “We have a responsibility to keep every New Yorker safe, and that includes when individuals are in custody of the NYPD. That is a responsibility that Police Commissioner [Bill] Bratton and I take very seriously. We are harnessing all resources available to the city to ensure a full and thorough investigation of the circumstances of this tragic incident. The NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is working closely with the Office of the Richmond County District Attorney, which is leading this investigation."

In the first period, Cerrone threw and landed multiple rear knees to the exposed body of the left-handed Miller. In the second round, "Cowboy" threw a front kick to the midsection of his New Jersey native opponent to great effect.Cerrone (24-6 MMA, 11-3 UFC) used body kicks to set up a second-round head-kick knockout of fellow lightweight contender Jim Miller (24-5 MMA, 13-4 UFC). The bout headlined Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 45 event at Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City.Early in the second round, the night appeared it’d have its third stoppage due to a body shot. Bench Clearing Brawl After Tempers Flare In Reds-Cubs Game (Video)

Today's afternoon Cubs-Reds game featured a bench-clearing when Reds reliever Aroldis Chapman almost hit Nate Schierholtz with one of his triple-digit pitches not once, but twice. Was Chapman trying to hit Schierholtz in a tie game in the ninth with one out? Probably not. Still, the Cubs dugout started yelling at him after the strikeout, which seemed reasonable. Even if this was just about Chapman's shitty control, they probably felt required to stick up for their teammate and say, "Hey, don't kill our outfielder, please." Chapman would go on to strike out Schierholtz, and as he walked off the rubber to prepare for his next batter, Chicago's Anthony Rizzo yelled at him from the dugout. To add fuel to the fire, Chapman waved to the Cubs dugout following the third out of the inning, and when Rizzo took the field, he continued to express his dismay. Once Rizzo threw his hat and glove on the ground, the argument had reached its boiling point. That’s when things got testy — not because of the strikeout, but because of what came before the punchout. Chapman threw consecutive pitches of 100 mph or more up near Schierholtz’s head.

The Late Show David Letterman - Dave Walks Out On Joan Rivers During Interview

On David Letterman‘s show, airing tonight on CBS, Joan Rivers was in the middle of explaining why she walked out on her interview with CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield over the weekend, Letterman suggested that perhaps the whole thing was a publicity stunt to promote Rivers’ new book, Diary of a Mad Diva, to which his guest said “just the opposite.” But when Rivers started talking about how she lost out on a big Depends endorsement, Letterman stood up, took off his jacket and walked directly off the stage. After explaining that Whitfield was "very judgmental, very nasty, very opinionated ... like my wedding night," Rivers told David Letterman that she was recently passed over for a Depends commercial. "While I'm talking to you, I'm taking a dump," Rivers joked of the commercial dialogue, to which Letterman promptly walked out.
