André Villas-Boas and Tottenham Hotspur were left to sweat on the fitness of their talisman Gareth Bale, after he was taken away on a stretcher in the dying moments of the club's 2-2 home draw with Basel in the Europa League quarter-final first leg.
Bale rolled his right ankle in ugly fashion, as he tussled with the Basel substitute David Degen and he was in obvious distress as he departed after treatment. He will undergo scans on Friday, which should make for a clearer picture. But, as everyone connected to the club hoped for the best, Villas-Boas revealed that the initial diagnosis was positive.If Bale, scorer of 27 goals for club and country this term, is sidelined for a lengthy period it would be a huge blow for Tottenham, who are battling to qualify for next season's Champions League via a top four finish in the Premier League.
Andre Villas-Boas's team are currently third and face a crucial clash against Everton on Sunday.The second half initially followed a similar pattern and, after Salah was foiled by Friedel, Naughton drew a fine save from Yann Sommer.
Tottenham managed to pull level when Lennon's replacement Sigurdsson beat Sommer from 22 yards via a deflection off Schar.
Basel worked hard to regain the lead - Salah and Jacques Zoua both wasted superb chances and Stocker went close with a free-kick.
Tottenham held firm but Bale's premature departure meant their evening ended on a sour note.
