UFC 192 Daniel Cormier Def. Alexander Gustafsson


Tonight's UFC 192 main event was for the light heavyweight championship between reigning champion Daniel Cormier and challenger Alexander Gustafsson. Much was made over Gustafsson getting a title shot coming off a KO loss to Anthony Johnson, and he came into this matchup as more than a 2-to-1 underdog. Cormier, however fortunate the circumstances were to him to actually win it, was making his first title defense.Daniel Cormier opened the fight as the aggressor and there was little action till he got a hold of Alexander Gustafsson. Cormier lifted Gustafsson into the air for quite the takedown, which was visually appealing and had the fans rising to their feet. Cormier worked from the top but Gustafsson got full guard. Cormier was able to escape and get to side control, but Gustafsson was also able to escape and return to his feet. Cormier came in with a combination that forced Gustafsson to scramble to the side to escape.Alexander went for a submission but nearly wound up side-mounted. Cormier went to half-guard and started busting Gustafsson up with elbows. Side control for Cormier was quickly lost as Gustafsson sprung back to his feet. After a Gustafsson kick, Cormier threw a wild right hand that more pushed Gustafsson than actually hurt him. Gustafsson went for a takedown, Cormier slipped, Cormier finished with a couple of uppercuts when he regained his footing.Cormier began the fight trying to walk down Gustafsson once again. Cormier began to mix in some low kicks. Cormier landed a big pair of rights and Gustafsson wobbled a bit trying to catch his balance. Gustafsson responded with a right of his own. Cormier got Gustafsson by the collar and landed a couple more upper cuts again. Cormier stumbled but got up quickly. Cormier was able to get a hold of Gustafsson once again and went for the upper cuts. Gustafsson tried to fight out of it with knees. Cormier became more relentless of his pursuit of Gustafsson but got caught and was dropped. Gustafsson opened up round 4 with kicks and stiff jabs. He went for a takedown and got stuffed. Back to the clinch they went but Cormier couldn't fire off more uppercuts. Cormier chased Gustafsson down and clubbed him with a right and left. Two right hands by Gustafsson who had found a second wind. The action slowed a bit at the midway point of the first championship round. Cormier ate a hard body kick that he tried to catch. A nice right hand by Cormier was answered with a Gustafsson knee to the midsection. Another knee in the clinch by Gustafsson, who was making Cormier chase him. Gustafsson landed the first big strike of the round, a right that knocked Cormier back. Cormier continued to chase Gustafsson and landed a big right of his own, stumbling Gustafsson. Cormier landed a kick to Gustafsson’s body. Cormier followed it up with a couple big left hook to Gustafsson’s face. Gustafsson went for a take down and Cormier stuffed it. Gustafsson continued to run to escape pressure and bad situations. Cormier got Gustafsson by the back of the neck again, but Gustafsson got a hold of Cormier’s hand to stop any potential upper cuts. The two continued to clinch in the final round, Gustafsson looking for some knees and Cormier working with his hands.
