In the context of the match, it meant little—Chelsea were already two goals to the good and scored a third from the resulting penalty—but as mistakes go, it was extraordinary. Oxlade-Chamberlain also was shown in television footage appearing to explain to Marriner that he was the one who had made the mistake, but to no avail.
