Chicago Blackhawks fans are collectively holding their breath after captain Jonathan Toews was forced from their game against the Pittsburgh Penguins Sunday with an upper-body injury. Toward the end of the second period, with the Penguins holding a 2-1 lead, Toews took control of the puck along the boards when Brooks Orpik drilled him.
The hit occurred in the second period. Toews was gathering the puck along the boards and didn't see Orpik coming, leading to one of the hardest hits of the season by far:
Toews immediately grabbed his arm or shoulder and limped off to the locker room. Here's a closer look at the hit.
The Blackhawks were down 2-1 at the time Toews was injured. Patrick Sharp also looked in pain on the bench, favoring his left arm/wrist, but he stayed in the game. The Blackhawks are already without Patrick Kane, out the rest of the regular season with a left leg injury, and Bryan Bickell, who could return from his upper-body injury on Thursday against the Minnesota Wild.
