Shane Ray Ejected After Massive Hit On Alabama QB Blake Sims (SEC Championship)

Missouri’s star defensive lineman Shane Ray was ejected from the SEC title game, for targeting on Alabama quarterback Blake Sims. Early in the second quarter, with the Crimson Tide clinging to a 7-0 lead, quarterback Blake Sims completed a 58-yard touchdown bomb to DeAndrew White. Right after Sims fired the scoring toss, Ray launched at him while leading with his helmet, earning the ejection. Ray's helmet and hands appeared to hit Alabama quarterback Blake Sims' facemask as Sims was in a prone position after releasing a 58-yard touchdown pass to DeAndrew White with 11:48 remaining in the second quarter. Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said some members of the Tigers' staff agreed with the call. Ray, a 6-foot-3, 245-pound defensive end, is arguably the Tigers’ best defensive player with an SEC-leading 13 ½ sacks. He had two tackles and one-half sack before leaving the game.Officials immediately threw a flag and called a personal foul on Ray for targeting. Officials upheld the personal foul ruling following a video review and Ray was escorted off the field. Ray leads the Southeastern Conference with 13 1/2 sacks and 20 1/2 tackles for loss. He set a Missouri record for sacks in a season.
