Montreal Canadiens enforcer George Parros was taken from the ice on a stretcher — and then reportedly taken to a local hospital — after he was injured during a fight in the season-opening game on Tuesday night.
The 33-year-old fought Toronto Maple Leafs counterpart Colton Orr in the second period before tangling again in the third. Orr seemed to lose his footing at the end of that second fight, and fell to the ice with his opponent’s jersey still clutched in his hand. Parros fell hard.
The two enforcers engaged with one another as Orr and Carter Ashton were trying to score on a two-on-one break early in the third period. As referees were approaching to stop the bout, Parros fell to the ground and drove his shoulder and head into the Bell Centre ice. The Maple Leafs and Canadiens are no strangers to fisticuffs in their games, as the Parros-Orr fight was the fourth one of the game. Both Parros and Orr received 10-minute game misconducts as well as five-minute majors for fighting.
