Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak collapsed on the field during a Sunday Night Football game vs. the Indianapolis Colts. Kubiak collapsed as the teams were coming off the field for halftime. He was tended to by medical officials on the field and taken to a hospital. The 52-year-old Kubiak has been the Texans’ head coach since the 2006 season. Before that, he was the Denver Broncos’ longtime offensive coordinator, and a backup quarterback for the Broncos from 1983 through ’91.
Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who has head coaching experience with the Broncos, Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys will be the interim coach through the remainder of the game. Phillips told NBC’s Michele Tafoya at the half that Kubiak’s heart rate was normal, and the trip to the hospital is purely precautionary.Tafoya adds that the decision to take Kubiak to the hospital was a precautionary measure and DC Wade Phillips will take over as the team’s head coach for the remainder of the game. Kubiak’s family left the stadium with him.
The Texans released a statement via their Twitter account regarding the situation:
We have no official update on head coach Gary Kubiak’s condition at this time. As more information becomes available we will inform you. Coach Kubiak has been taken to a local hospital, he is conscious and his family is with him.
