UAE : Massive fire engulfs Dubai 'Torch' residential tower

A massive blaze has engulfed the ‘Marina Torch’ skyscraper in Dubai, forcing hundreds of people to flee the 336-meter-high tower – one of the tallest residential buildings in the world. It took firefighters over two hours to bring the fire under control. The fire initially started in the middle of the tower, rapidly spreading across some 15 floors, intensifying and reigniting with each gust of wind, according to photos and videos from the scene. There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries in the blaze, which was believed to have started around the 52nd floor. The building is part of the densely populated and highrise-filled marina district, popular among Dubai's ex-patriate population. The fire was brought under control around 4 a.m. local time, Gulf Business reported, adding that only a few floors appeared to have been "gutted" by the blaze.Local media reported that upwards of 10 fire engines responded after the blaze broke out near the 50th floor, and that police had blocked off the area and evacuated nearby buildings. Resident Mehdi Ansari told NBC News that the fire had spread to 10 or 15 floors. A witness told Gulf News it was like seeing the Titanic going down."Debris from the fire cluttered nearby streets after the blaze appeared to be extinguished," the Associated Press reported. Frank Strait said due to the height of the building, winds may have been closer to 50 mph. According to the Associated Press, residents in neighboring structure adjacent to the 70-story building were asked to evacuate due to the fierce winds.
