An American League East divisional battle between the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday got heated and resulted in benches clearing in the seventh inning. Umpires ejected Boston's Jonny Gomes and Tampa Bay's Yunel Escobar from the ballgame amid the chaos. The benches emptied when Escobar began walking toward the Sox dugout, at which point Jonny Gomes came in from left field and shoved Escobar. There was some pushing and shoving between the teams after that, but it didn’t escalate much further. Escobar, Gomes and Rays infielder Sean Rodriguez were all ejected.Red Sox left fielder Jonny Gomes came in and shoved Escobar in the face, ultimately leading to his ejection.
The most heated on the Tampa Bay side appeared to be Jose Molina, Grant Balfour and Sean Rodriguez. Rodriguez was also thrown out of the game, along with Escobar.Players from both benches ran onto the field, and more shoving occurred, but tempers eventually cooled down. If anything, it was fun to see another chapter in the Boston-Tampa Bay rivalry.
