Marlon Byrd Broke His Bat Swinging Without Touching The Ball

In a bizarre moment that has to be seen to be believed, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Marlon Byrd had his bat break into two pieces on a pitch he swung at and missed completely. During Sunday afternoon's game against the New York Mets, Byrd took a typically healthy cut at a fastball from left-hander Jonathan Niese. However, before Byrd's bat could get to the baseball, it snapped at the handle and the barrel went flying toward the first base side of the pitcher's mound.Byrd was left looking confused yet amused, holding only the knob of the bat despite not even getting a piece of the ball on his swing. Byrd was able to redeem himself some later in the game since, for the third consecutive game, the Mets and Phillies went to extra innings. In the top of the 11th, the Mets took a 4-2 lead on a Lucas Duda home run. Byrd came back in the bottom half of the inning and swung hard again, but this time he actually made contact and hit a home run, cutting the lead to 4-3, before Ryan Howard grounded out feebly to end the game.
