Grammy Awards 2014 Lorde's 'Royals' Wins Song Of The Year

The song of the year at the 56th Grammy Awards went to Lorde’s “Royals,” a study in class consciousness she and songwriting partner Joel Little wrote just to see if they could attract anyone’s attention. “We made this song originally to give it away for free,” Little said after they stepped up to the Staples Center stage to collect the songwriting award over nominated works by Bruno Mars, Pink and Nate Ruess, Katy Perry and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. “To be here now in this room with so many legends and people whose work I admire is an honor.” Lorde, the stage name of 17-year-old New Zealand singer-songwriter Ella Yelich O’Connor, said: “I probably wouldn’t be here if Joel wasn’t here. This guy has nurtured me through kind of my first year of songwriting, which I will forever owe him. Thank you everyone who has let this song explode, because it’s been mental.”Jay Z, who led all artists with nine nominations, did win best rap/sung collaboration for "Holy Grail," a collaboration with Justin Timberlake. Addressing his daughter Blue, Jay Z said, "Daddy just got a gold sippy cup for you." Macklemore & Lewis' "Same Love," a song written in support of same-sex marriage, is being singled out in a major Grammy event: a mass wedding featuring 34 couples taking the stage of Los Angeles' Staples Center. Queen Latifah will officiate, and Madonna will serve as maid of honor.Among other winners announced prior to the telecast, Michael Buble's To Be Loved won best traditional pop vocal album, Steve Martin and Edie Brickell's Love Has Come for You was named best American roots song, and Ziggy Marley in Concert garnered best reggae album — sending Snoop Dogg to his 16th Grammy loss. Draco Rosa's Vida took home best Latin pop album. Best spoken-word album went to comedian Stephen Colbert's America Again: Re-becoming the Greatness We Never Weren't, and Kathy Griffin's Calm Down Gurrl was best comedy album. Herb Alpert won best pop instrumental album for Steppin' Out, Laura Sullivan's Love's River was named best new age album, the Broadway show Kinky Boots received the award for best musical theater album, and the James Bond film Skyfall won both best score soundtrack and best song written for visual media for the Adele title track. The song topped Pink and Nate Ruess' "Just Give Me a Reason," Bruno Mars' "Locked Out of Heaven," Katy Perry's "Roar" and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Same Love." "Royals" spent nine consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was also nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. Recent Song of the Year winners include Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now," Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" and Coldplay's "Viva la Vida."
